Cleaning Keyboards

This article will describe the proper procedure for cleaning a keyboard.  Keyboards should be cleaned on a regular basis as part of a preventative maintenance routine.  This procedure can be performed by end users.

  • Turn off your computer.
  • Gather your cleaning supplies.
    • Damp paper towels or towels dampened with a mild cleanser
    • Cotton swabs
    • Can of compressed air (optional)

  • Turn the keyboard upside down and shake any large loose debris from between the keys.
  • Use a can of compressed air to blow any small dust particles and debris from the underside of the keys.
  • Use a damp cloth to clean in between keys and on top of the keys.

  • For stubbord dirt and dust in hard to reach areas you may use a special keyboard brush or an old toothbrush to remove debris.
  • Avoid using strong chemicals on keys as they may remove the printing from the keys.
